John Sinclair Presents Detroit Artists Workshop
This ambitious compilation is the culmination of five years of work from Strut and Art Yard digging through the archives of author, DJ and activist John Sinclair - one time manager of MC5 and founder of the Detroit Artists Workshop.
Beginning his life as a rock 'n roll obsessive, John Sinclair found his footing in the 1960s counter-culture movement, supporting radical social movements and organizing the soundtrack simultaneously. He managed influential rock band MC5, had a career as a "jazz poet", was a regular radio DJ and formed the White Panther Party to support the Black Panther Party in opposition of the US government. This touching tribute is a record of his time running the Detroit Artists Workshop, originally a small space in the city for poets, musicians, photographers, filmmakers and anyone else interested to congregate and collaborate.
Here we're treated to live recordings that build a retrospective of the Workshop, featuring contributions from hard bop pioneer Donald Byrd, jazz fusion organist Lyman Woodard, the Detroit Contemporary 4, Ron English, Teddy Harris, and Bennie Maupin Quartet. This one's for heads certainly, but if you're interested in how an open, free-flowing space has the power to help shape a sound and a movement, it's definitely worth a closer look.
