Boomkat Product Review:
Coming from the ‘Oracles’ series (which focuses on women in experimental music) on John Zorn’s legendary Tzadik label is ‘John Brown’s Body’ from pianist Robin Holcomb. Apparently she’s had some quite significant singer/songwriter albums out on major labels, but that’s hard to hear in this largely experimental work. Centring around her ivory tickling, ‘John Brown’s Body’ is a fragile and heartfelt record, with the songs steeped in melancholia. This isn’t a bad thing either, what we have is a quite beautiful collection of tracks, and something of an oddity on the Tzadik label. A number of the tracks utilise a string quartet and a number more her vocals, but for me it’s the solo piano tracks which work best in their slow, thoughtful pacing and meaningful writing. Lovely.
