Boomkat Product Review:
A strange and angular piece of work, Metalycee's It Is Not brings together industrial-style instrumental performances, abrasive electronic programming and confrontationally weird vocal performaces. 'Cordelia's Song' plunges you in at the deep end, sounding a bit like Stewie Griffin from Family Guy trying to make something like Scott Walker's The Drift with a Shakespearean theme. Persist with the album and you'll be struck by the same sort of piercing menace and sonic creativity you'd associate with Einsturzende Neubauten in their prime. 'Donal Og' is especially successful on this front, perhaps equally suggesting the stranger output of Current 93 in its caustic musical vocabulary and theatrical performance poetry. The album's not always out to challenge/punish you though: 'Spiders On Toast' treats you to some heavy Dalek-style hip hop, which at least presents you with a release from vocalist Matija Schellander's bizarre and downright creepy narratives.
