Boomkat Product Review:
This tenth album by Up, Bustle & Out takes actress and singer Sevval Sam as its star, her voice providing a lynchpin for an album which includes musicians from Thievery Corporation, Portishead and Nouvelle Vague all helping to fashion a tapestry of East-meets-West cross-genre sounds. The music here takes traditional Turkish instrumentation and musical templates only to merge them with hip hop, dub and electronica influences. Some songs sound relatively untampered with by modern production elements, with only a handful of electronic bleeps stopping 'Giden Gitti' from sounding like a straight forward piece of middle eastern folk pop. At the other end of the scale you're confronted with the sampled beats and muffled electronics of 'Remote Corners'. It's not all about the production details however: flamenco guitar maestro Cuffy 'El Guapo' provides a splendid one-man intro to 'Hidjaz Ask', a track which later morphs into an electronic, trip-hop excursion. Also included as part of the package is a second disc, comprised of dub versions of the vocal-heavy originals.
