Boomkat Product Review:
The myriad-faceted, Latin-American artist, Roberto Carlos Lange whittles his 3 volume Island Universe Story (2012-2014) into to a lush and varied topography of laid-back future folk songs, brooding synth-pop and unique sound sculpture in Selected Works.
Over the years you may have recognised Lange’s music as Boom & Birds or Epstein, or for his contributions to Prefuse 73 and Julianna Barwick albums. Essentially, this record draws a zig-zagging line thru all those projects to form a hazy, unique perspective on his latest work.
It’s a version of a 21st century Latin America that possibly shares more in common with the folksy, wooly, experimental inhabitants of Asthmatic Kitty or the experimental ‘70s Tropicalia of Tom Zé than much of the modern music from that region that we’ve heard, but we’re no experts and haven’t even been there so WTF do we know?
Either way, there’s some lovely pieces in here, like the Animal Collective-esque Las Preguntas, and the Dilla-esque beatdown wobble of Detroit, both from Story Two, or the Toro Y Moi-alike slow disco of Mamember (Largo Long) from Story One, and the dusty Americana wheeze of Mitad De Tu Mundo.
