Arriving on Caterina Barbieri's light-years imprint, Ludwig Wandinger's latest is a far cry from his Filther material, a fairytale suite of achingly dreamy electronic nocturnes that'll appeal to fans of AFX's 'Selected Ambient Works' plates or vintage Eno.
Wandinger came up with this one purely out of necessity. Not only was he incessantly touring, but the German producer, drummer and visual artist was picking himself back up in the aftermath of a broken relationship. He needed sleep, or at least some kind of peace, so began to write music for himself while holed up in hotel rooms in the downtime between shows. And that's exactly what the music sounds like - anxious, emotionally open reflections that quiver between tranquility and tempered ferocity.
Like a dream, it's hard to pick out clear images from the music. Wandinger works in the clouds, queering his lulling music box melodies and obscuring baroque phrases with sandy distortions. He's assisted by multi-disciplinary artist, poet and activist Yves B. Golden on two tracks, and lets her words dissolve into the ambience, activating the music's most surreal visualizations. "Balloons and birds delight in the flow of air between rooms," she almost whispers on the title track over Wandinger's peaceable chimes. And when she returns on 'Eternal Image', she's more barbed. Wandinger's gentle euphoria is traded for coarse digital textures, while Golden murmurs "bodies like mine are made for turbulence."
There's even a brief detour into somnolent pop, courtesy of PAN's Evita Manji, who recorded their vocals as they were drifting into a deep sleep. Wandinger responds with quieted trance arpeggios and an almost imperceivable 4/4 - it's music for the dancefloor in the sky.
