Boomkat Product Review:
An ambassador for rebooted IDM, Ryan Lee West, makes very modern sounding electronic music that's not quite a slave to the dancefloor, but nor is it a strictly home listening experience. In amongst the polished nouveau acid of the title track and 'Func' you get flirtations with hipster electro like '1985' or 'Digital Fuck', even getting a bit 'Wearing My Rolex' on 'Preoccupied Fashion Bastard'. The shadow of a certain Richard D. James looms squarely over this record too; you can hear his influence cast over the detuned chords of 'XPR VR' and the frantic rhythms of 'Agenda', although there's enough freshness here for West to merely sound as if he's respectfully paying homage rather than plundering anyone else's ideas. If Clark's Totem's Flare offers a breath of new life into electronica with some sort of post-IDM mindset, IO makes for a compelling, if less esoteric alternative.
