Alvars Orkester were formed some time in 1987 in the mists of Sweden by a young Joachim Nordwall and Jan Svensson, and since then the two have to some degree grown into pivotal experimental music nodes.
The duo ran the influential Börft Records label, but more recently Nordwall went on to form iDEAL, the label and festival which would become one of Sweden's most interesting exports. Also a member of noise act the Skull Defekts (among others) Nordwall has been an artist it's always worth keeping an eye on and this latest is possibly his most consistent to date. 'Interference' is a series of sound experiments based on the fragility of the mind, whether due to psychological problems or mind-altering substances and the resulting drones, played off against burst of intense noise are about as close as you get to a representation of the mind as you can come.
Humming analogue electronics are the order of the day here, and taking influence from the experimental pioneers of the 60s and 70s Nordwall and Svensson do a fabulous job of not only resurrecting this sound but also adding enough of their own spunk to make it different and gloriously inventive. Of course their industrial roots show through, but this is no bad thing and like their friends Wolf Eyes the grimy, creaking metallic structures give the record a cloying claustrophobia that's impossible not to get sucked into as the synthesizer pulses and rusted vocals envelope the mind. The most interesting thing about 'Interference' for me however is the shocking amount of restraint on offer, and far from the noise assault you'd expect this shows the duo's pedigree and understanding of the genre and marks another high-water point for the Ash International label.
