Boomkat Product Review:
One of the two devastating, next level hip hop production signees to Ninja Tune in the last quarter debuts with this insanely good 12". Blockhead is known to me for his awesome production for Aesop Rock on 'Float' and 'Labor Days' plus his spot on dope breaks set for Mush called 'Broke Beats'. This four tracker kicks off with the title track, that's some purest cinematic downtempo freshness - haunting piano, delicious lilting vocals and distorted guitar blasts fused to lonesome trumpet melodics and deep beat percusifics. 'Carnivors Unite' completes the a-side with a more fired up hip hop, kinda like RJD2, with a Bernard Herrmann soundtracky element. On the flip 'A New Day' drops that somewhat overly familiar "it's a new dawn, it's a new day" vocal sample over laid back beats, spaced chords, harmonica and juicy bass. Lastly you get 'Triptych Part 3' killer slo-mo sonics, ruffed bass, bassy gruff vocals and beautiful piano hits. Wonderfully evocative. Oh yeah, that other signee is Sixtoo, both will deliver devastating instrumental long players for Daddy Ninja early in the 04'. I cannay wait.
