Boomkat Product Review:
Originally released as a tour-only release, circulating in 2005, Inside The Shadow now gets a proper reissue from Dominick Fernow's Hospital Productions. Here, C. Spencer Yeh (operating under his Burning Star Core moniker) unleashes purely organic soundscapes, carved out of violin plus bells and other such sonorous textures. The album's quarter-hour title track eschews electronic sound sources in favour of gruff, overdriven string drones and a turbulent cacophony of jangling metals. It all sounds somehow ritualistic, even devotional in tone, perhaps carrying an air of gamelan about it too. On 'United' Yeh turns his violin into something that resembles a synthesizer, spinning sustaining, electronically modulated chords that flirt with quivering, drone-infused melodies. Once again, there's something about its trance-friendly throb that approaches a quasi-religious tone. The final piece reprises the steady, textured drone of the opening cut, but strips it of the chiming metallic elements leaving a beam of grimy tape noise and string tonality. Recommended.
