DERRICK MAY / RHYTHIM IS RHYTHIM
Innovator - Soundtrack For The Tenth Planet
Derrick May’s early “best of” is now finally available again, newly expanded with the once-thought-lost ‘Hand Over Hand’
Racking up his template-setting Detroit zingers of the late ‘80s/early ‘90s produced as Derrick May, Mayday, and Rhythim Is Rhythim, ‘Innovator - Soundtrack for the Tenth Planet’ was issued by May’s UK ambassadors at Network Records as a handy comp of golden hits back in 1991. It now appears with the bonus cut ‘Hand Over Hand’, a late ‘80s production off a DAT that was stolen, but eventually turned up and lead to the track appearance on a Japanese Transmat CD in 2012.
You’ll find some all time Detroit classics between the svelte depth of ‘The Dance’, his clambering piano house classique ‘Strigns of Life’, and the sleazy funk of ‘Sinister’, ‘Wiggin’, and ‘Nude Photo’. It also includes ‘Beyond The Dance’, but the mastering job there leaves a lot to be desired (best find this one elsewhere), while ‘Hand Over Hand’ will possibly be a new find for many Detroit fiends, catching May at his loosest, louchest and dreamiest.
