Boomkat Product Review:
Modern Silence present three archival recordings of Steve Reich and Philip Glass pieces, including an amazing rendition performed by percussionists from Ghana.
Originally recorded live in NYC November 1969 and broadcast by KPFA-FM, as far as we can tell, these recordings have never appeared on another format.
On side A you’ll find Four Organs performed by Steve Reich, Steve Chambers, Art Murphy, Philip Glass on electric organs accompanied by Jon Gibson’s maracas, and it’s worth noticing the way the record’s concentric grooves expand in waves according to the piece’s mathematic logic.
As it was a radio show, Reich and Gibson introduce the players and name of the next piece, Drumming, which is worth the entry alone, executed with such hypnotic, transfixing verve, performed by percussionists from Ghana.
And if you need any more justification, there’s a gorgeous, transcendent rendition of Philip Glass’ Music in Similar Motion on the other side.
No hype; this slays for days!!!
