Luke Younger’s Alter host the snarl and EBM muscle of Anglo-Aussie duo PC Music, and remixes from MVTANT and DivPro, for a sound recalling classic Cabaret Voltaire and Clock DVA thru to Gatekeeper’s contemporary homage
‘Infinite World’ is PC Music’s 3rd album since committing their eponymous debut in 2019, and marks a surprise change of pace and style for Alter. Perhaps unlike the neo hordes of fetish wear-clad ravers merging EBM and its cousin hard techno, PC Music look to the original late ‘80s and early ‘90s styles for inspiration with appropriately muscle-twanging and sleazy results perhaps best compared with Aaron David Ross & Matthew Arkellat’s Chicago wax Trax tributes as the now defunct Gatekeeper.
On PC World’s original cuts they err to a slower, swaggering style primed for darkroom canter and snakey shoulder action, as characterised in the pendulous come-on ‘At Heaven’s Gate’, and turned darker on the sleek. night-glyding arpstrumental ‘Infinite Dream Weapon’, whilst ‘Doublevision’ wraps up with a strong nod to Cabaret Voltaire’s foundational influence on the body music. MVTANT scheme in with a hiccuping hunk of fun in their remix of ‘At Heaven’s Gate’, and NYC’s DiVPro emphasise the industrial funk with divebombing bass and ricocheting foundry percussion in their take on the same elements.
