Boomkat Product Review:
Heavyweight platter from The Bug, dropping two brand new cuts with vox from Hitomi and Roots Manuva, plus remixes of his classics 'Skeng' and 'Poison Dart' from Autechre and DVA, respectively. To be fair, the opener 'Catch A Fire' could easily have appeared under his King Midas Sound or Black Chow aliases, largely due to the balance of Hitomi's honeyed vocals with the bottom end tug and crushing snares. Quite surprisingly, 'Tune In' is the first time The Bug and Roots Manuva have colluded on a track, finding a scorched common ground between their rooted disciplines with Roots coming off like a preacher caught on some stray pirate station, ranting apocryphal bars over a dread Radiophonic Ragga riddim. Autechre are an unusual but inspired choice to remix the classic 'Skeng', not surpassing the cataclysmic Kode 9 version but putting a hugely effective and menacing spin on the track, nonetheless. Can we have an instrumental on vinyl please?! Tipping out on a Funky flex, DVA rounds off with his 'Poison Dart' remix, retuning the cut with a motor of rattly West African drums and squibbly subs for the ravers. BIG!!!
