Boomkat Product Review:
*Back in stock* This disc gives a long-awaited release to one of Glenn Branca’s most celebrated works, recorded in 1981 at NYC’s Radio City Studios and featuring a pre-Sonic Youth Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo performing alongside Branca mainstays Craig Bromberg, Barbara Ess, Jeffrey Glenn, Sue Hanel, David Rosenbloom and Ned Sublette. The piece is a vast, microtonally tangled cacophony given percussive support from drummer and timpanist, Stephan Wischerth, who provides the most discernibly structured contribution to this exhilaratingly difficult thirty-minute work. The second track is an incredibly fascinating conversation between John Cage and Wim Mertons in which Cage quietly but articulately berates Branca’s music, whilst (appropriately for Cage) incidental location sounds float quietly in the background. The previously unreleased composition, ‘Harmonic Series Chords’, as performed by the New York Chamber Sinfonia rounds off the disc. Its complex, megalithic chords managing to sound simultaneously ominous and magical.
