Boomkat Product Review:
These trio recordings set pianist and NYC jazz staple John Blum alongside drummer Sunny Murray and bassist William Parker. While ardent followers of free-jazz will appreciate the craft behind this record and the sense of its place within the context of that music's history, fans of Ecstatic Peace's more usual output will no doubt be able to appreciate and identify with the more out-there elements of these performances, and the feeling of complete musical liberation that seems to hover over them. From any perspective, Blum's playing is masterful and fluid to the point where you might actually find yourself having a little chuckle to yourself - just listen to him chasing his own fingers around the keyboard; it's really quite ridiculous, but effervesces musicality. The rhythm section also warrants some serious plaudits, and although they're situated fairly low down in the mix both Murray and Parker manage to keep control over each piece whilst retaining that feeling that absolutely anything could happen at any given moment.
