In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
First released way-back-when in 1997, 'In The Aeroplane Over The Sea' is receiving a re-release thanks to the chatty praise people like the Arcade Fire and Boom Bip have been gobbing their way. With a sound that has seemingly influenced the previous of those champions far more acutely than the latter, Neutral Milk Hotel is full of bombastic indie rock which belies there connections to the Georgia-based Elephant 6 collective (Apples in Stereo/Olivia Tremor Control etc.). At times sounding like a collaboration between They Might Be Giants and The Smashing Pumpkins (make of that what you will...), Neutral Milk Hotel alternate happily between downbeat ones and loud-as-you-like ones, instilling a deep folk sensibility to the excursions since popularised by Arcade Fire. At first a bit annoying, songs like 'The King of Carrot Lowers Pts. Two and Three' (and it's chants of "I love you Jesus Christ") soon take on a leathery appeal; i.e. fusty yet comfortable. Not as conventional as it initially seems, 'In The Aeroplane Over The Sea' will find a much wider audience in the current musical climate than it did in the post-Brit Pop tundra...
