Boomkat Product Review:
R&S present a very special labour of love from legendary Optimo DJ, JD Twitch, given access to their archives to pick out a definitive selection of his favourite label tracks from the early 90's. There's justifiably been a lot of excitement across the internet and in actual real life over this CD, mainly due to the point-perfect mixing, programming and sequencing of this seminal period of electronic music. As he points out in the extensive sleeve notes accompanying the disc, when Twitch was first buying Belgian records in the late 80's and regularly playing them up until roughly 1994, it was a completely new experience for people in Glasgow to hear these records played through powerful soundsystems while under the influence of narcotics. He's scarily managed to bottle and distill the essence of that visceral thrill with this mix, developing deadly grooves with layers of his favourite tracks and knowingly delivering that impact with tracks like Beltram's 'energy Flash'. But it's not al about the big tracks either, this is a personal history of that early phase of R&S and as such includes a number of cuts that won't be on everyones top 5 lists, but work awesomely well in this context like Spock Jr.'s 'Ion (Boccaccio Mix)', or Sonic Solution's 'Bagdad'. There's undoubtedly a hefty amount of stone cold classics here, but maybe try putting yourself in the sweaty Air Max of a Weejie raver in 1992 and listen to the mix without the tracklisting and just buzz off the sheer druggy effectiveness of it all? Stupidly heavy mix, massively recommended!
