In My Own Time
Apparently the record wasn't so well received on its release, mainly due to the fact that Dalton experimented with tracks that weren't strictly folk (you don't wanna upset those purists!) such as the much overdone romantic classic 'When a Man Loves a Woman' for instance. To give her her dues though, Dalton pulls it off and re-contextualises a song that might otherwise be considered the epitome of bad wedding music which is no mean feat. The rest of the record of course is easier to instantly fall in love with, and includes a timely version of folk classic 'Katie Cruel' which has notably been covered recently by both White Magic and Bert Jansch on their respective latest records. Dalton's Billie Holiday style vocals turn the track on its head making even the most perfect version you've heard sound lacking in some way - and in that is her finest talent. She is a singer with the ability to make you hear a song totally differently, to hear emotions in different places - her renditions allow you to hear the full story, and that is something so many contemporary singers are missing. Unmissable.
