Boomkat Product Review:
Tompkins Square's latest Imaginational Anthem set is dedicated to the late Michal Chapman, and Henry Parker has assembled a crew of Northern musicians to re-imagine some of Chapman's best-loved jams.
Chapman was born in Leeds, and cut his teeth playing in British folk clubs in the '60s, developing a style that incorporated jazz, folk, country and ragtime. Before he died in 2021, Chapman's beloved Harvest back catalog was reissued by Light in the Attic, and he recorded a slew of instrumental albums for Tompkins Square. So it's fitting that the label should memorialize his influence with this twelfth edition of their long-running "Imaginational Anthem" series.
They enlisted Yorkshire-based psych folk player Henry Parker to curate the compilation, and Parker scoured Northern England for working musicians to contribute. He kicks off the set himself, covering Chapman's 1970 track 'In the Valley', before Dean McPhee offers up a gauzy version of 2000's 'Caddo Lake'. Katie Spencer's cover of 'You Say' captures the Americana spirit of the original, and Holly Blackshaw's magical version of 'March Rain' is worth the asking price alone.
