Boomkat Product Review:
Ryan York is perhaps best known for his Asura project, but we guess that's about to change with this dazzling release under his own name. 'If I Am This Forest' is a lush and vivid mesh of chamber-pop vocals and west coast psychedelia knitted together with frayed, organic-feeling synthesis. It's a immersively synaesthetic experience, entering to the blooming, phosphorescent 8-bit ecosystem of the title track, which sounds like Panda Bear programmed by Laurel Halo, or drifting in the seductive swing rhythms of 'Sea Water' splashed by gentle percussion and tangibly effervescent electronics. Animal Collective are an undoubted reference point for the harmonised vocals of 'As the Darkness (After the Crash)', but the frothing, cyclical rhythms and spooling arpeggios are a figment of his own imagination, while 'Me and You', comes to rest with the sort of exquisite, crystalline music box pop which could have appeared on Morr Music at their peak.
