Boomkat Product Review:
Compiling the best and near full roster of the brilliant Ghostly International label, Idol Tryouts is a slick and superb compilation that is a breath of fresh as far as label comps go. Tracks offered up from : Dabrye, Telefon Tel Aviv, Twine, Matthew Dear, Kero, Charles Manier, Kill Memory Crash, Dykehouse, Midwest Product, Tadd Mullinix (Dabrye), Matthew Dear and James Cotton combine to deliver a great mash up of styles from this always intriguing imprint. Dabrye opens up proceedings with 'Making it Pay', a jazz inflected break with lush chords and fat drums in true Dabrye style, Charles Manier delivers a Ron Hardy classic with a late 80's sounding Music Box pounder, all Mororder keys and electro drums, while Outputmessage deliver a superb and old school breakbeat techno track. Using lush strings and Aphex style synths the track is an emotive example of Outputmessage's work and will gain them many fans from just this point on, watch this man, ace. Elsewhere the metallic experiments of Twine offer clanging almost tin pan drums that flicker around the loose construction and get messy, and the lo-fi electro of Kero (Bpitch) rounds the album up with a crunchy ending. Check out the sublime Telefon Tel Aviv / Midwest Product collaboration for a prime example of just how moving and sublime electronic music can really be. Excellent.
