Boomkat Product Review:
How unbelievably good is that riff? I mean seriously, Jack White's always had a unique ability to knock out some truly awesome guitar lines but he's really outdone himself with this one. It's the sort of thing that would make Jimmy Page blush. As a guitarist there's no disputing that Jack's one of the defining voices in modern American rock, and on 'Icky Thump' he really cuts loose. Further to that, the recording will have purists in analog heaven: it's about as rough and ready as rock music comes, with Meg's mighty kick drum clipping outrageously throughout. Awesome. On the B-side 'Catch Hell Blues' there's some more pitch-shifted blues riffing at work, with some particularly greasy-sounding slide work. The reason these guys sound so good has to be down to that rare balance they strike up between top-notch musicianship and a strident rawness of sound. So very, very good.
