Boomkat Product Review:
Guillermo Scott Herren unleashes yet another new project following on from his recent Prefuse 73 album and soon to be released new Savath & Savalas set for Stones Throw. Diamond Watch Wrists sees him in collaboration with extraordinarily frantic drummer Zach Hill of Hella fame and across twelve shortish tracks they create a curious blend of breezy folk songs and intricate instrumentals playing in and out of eachother. Opening track "My Last Time In This Place" sounds like a cross between 1960's California pop, Battles and Tortoise and sets the agenda perfectly, just as you think you've got the measure of the music and settle into its pace things take another turn and reset your expectations. "Start Wrong" pushes the layered vocals one step further with a line in harmonies that's not a million miles removed from classic Brian Wilson shorn of any discernible musical accompaniment, while the set ends with the excellent "Ending", an ambient drone that frays and disintegrates after a short 90 second lifespan. With a brilliantly incongruous blinged up sleeve to boot it's actually quite the treat and much more than the sum of its parts - one for fans of either Herren's or Hill's work, or for that matter anyone into Tortoise, Battles or classic psychedelic pop. Recommended.
