Boomkat Product Review:
Small-scale and insular, ‘I Was A Cat From A Book’ is a brave and rewarding album from James Yorkston, who’s done a good ten years since his classic debut ‘Moving Up Country’ hit the airwaves. Using the simplest of instrumentation – keyboards, drum machines and light strings, Yorkston ends up in a very personal place and ‘I Was A Cat From A Book’ (possibly a reference to Natsume Soseki’s influential Japanese novel?) is his most rewarding record for a long while. This is quiet, delicate music without any of the nauseating grandeur you’d expect in most modern songs, and is all the better for it. Give it a chance and it might just creep up on you in the best possible way.
