Boomkat Product Review:
Heroes of the Japanese underground, 54-71 have been together for thirteen years or so, and on extravagantly titled I'm Not Fine, Thank You. And You? illustrates, they are a finely oiled machine, spluttering out jerky, punky math-pop whilst fusing a variety of different influences, even extending to a kind of new wave-infused Latin funk on 'Cracked'. Apparently Battles and Deerhoof have been known to lavish praise on this lot and you can certainly see why they'd be in admiration of the band's tightness, which incidentally, is revealed in all its rawness on this album by a crisp and clear Steve Albini production job.
