Boomkat Product Review:
Carla Bozulich's 2004 album I'm Gonna Stop Killing (if ever there was a New Year's resolution worth sticking to...) came immediately after her reinterpretation of Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger, and indeed the first two tracks on this album are drawn from that record. Two of the standouts, 'Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain' and 'Can I Sleep In Your Arms' (featuring Willie Nelson himself on guitar and vocals) are presented as "a little taste" of Red Headed Stranger, leaving the remainder of this disc to previously unreleased live recordings of Bozulich and her brilliant live band in performance. Nels Cline returns on electric guitar and lap steel, with the incredible Carla Kihlstedt contributing violin to this mix of originals, improvisations and covers (of songs by artists like Neil Young and Marianne Faithful). While it might sound like it's been formatted as an odds and ends compilation, I'm Gonna Stop Killing remains an electrifying document of Bozulich's post Geraldine Fibbers solo career, and those live recordings are just great.
