I'll Meet You On That Other Shore
Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Alan Lomax's "Southern Journey", Global Jukebox present a crucial reissue of 'I'll Meet You On That Other Shore' including exclusive, previously unissued versions and tracks. As the story goes, Alan and Shirley Collins took a field recording trip to the southern states in late 1959 in the middle of an American folk revival he had partly instigated with his 'American ballads and Folk Songs' and 'Our Singing Country' song books a decade or so before. This time he was armed with top end German microphones and one of the very earliest portable stereo recorders, effectively making the first ever recordings of rural American folk, blues and gospel, in stereo. Legendary North Mississippi bluesman, Fred McDowell, opens this installment with 'What's The Matter Now', and there's a slew of previously unissued tracks on the B-side, including the incredible oil drum and vocals of the n Unidentified woman & St. James Church congregation with the titular 'I'll Meet You On that Other Shore', and the hypnotic banjo of Lucius Smith's rendition of 'Goodbye Honey, You Call that Gone'. This LP also includes the famous performance of 'Moses, Don't Get Lost' by John Davis & The Georgia Sea Island Singers. An ESSENTIAL purchase!
