Boomkat Product Review:
Three long tracks of transcendental guitar drone from Pete Swanson, new on New York's Three Lobed Recordings, who released his band Yellow Swans' bleakly brilliant Descension set. Outwardly expansive but internally cryptic, these reverb-heavy workouts recall the emotive fretboard improvisations of Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo's and Charambalides' Tom Carter, particularly sand-blasted, sun-bleached opener 'Know When To Say Wha?'. The more loop-oriented 'Cocktail Champion' is closer in sound and spirit to our very favourite Swanson and Yellow Swans recordings, a kind of industrial Americana, plangent melodic figures shooting rainbow-like across a roaring Niagara of feedback. 'Stuff It''s lofty, ceremonial chord progressions slowly lose their footing, dissolving into a thick fog of distortion which promises catharsis but delivers only more uncertainty. Incendiary, outer-limits guitar music.
