Boomkat Product Review:
A highly unusual album by Ecstatic Peace standards, Matt Krefting's first album for the label is a selection of covers picked from throughout the history of classic rock, all played out with a reverent authenticity, ably assisted by a backing band that includes Sunburned Hand Of The Man and Dinosaur Jr's J Mascis. Initially Thurston Moore approached Krefting about making a drone record comprised of synths and tape loops, but soon Krefting's desire to record a covers album became apparent. After the initial puzzlement of how unbelievably trad the tone is (check out Krefting's Josh Groban-alike vocals), you start noticing the more obviously raw and ramshackle constituents - the record has a vibrant live feel to it, and occasional mistakes are left in the mix, but the overwhelming impression this selection leaves you with is just how scholarly and loving a tribute this is. Songs by John Martyn, Van Morrison, The Band's Rick Danko, Bill Fay and The Grateful Dead are all handled brilliantly, and Richard Thompson's 'Calvary Cross' sounds spine-tinglingly great, featuring some gorgeous, roomy backing vocals. Highly recommended.
