Boomkat Product Review:
Conceived as a soundtrack to an Angela Bulloch artwork, this new David Grubbs recording also prompts consideration as an extension of his latest solo album, An Optimist Notes The Dusk. Here Grubbs' overdriven electric guitar tones are left to roam the recording largely unfettered and unadorned, opening up with a few loosely pinned together exchanges that form the basis of a repeating figure that goes on to haunt the piece. After around three-and-a-half minutes of terse, distorted licks a final sustaining note spouts a feedback tone from which the remainder of the piece develops, converging on a slightly more weathered sounding take on the earlier minimal motif. Once again the piece descends into a throb of glassy drone signals before the whole process is started again. A curious twenty-six minute work, this is no easy ride and it's not easy to make sense of detached from the installation it was designed for, but these raw, cyclical guitar exclamations have a certain gnarled, enigmatic beauty to them.
