Boomkat Product Review:
Commodo coins a canny hybrid of dubstep, hip hop and grime sensibilities, bolstered by guest gobs, Trim and Rocks FOE, in his 12-track debut LP.
After murking the game with stacks of 12”s for Deep Medi, Hotline and Black Box, How What Time gives him room to stretch the definition of 140bpm dubstep in myriad directions, taking cues front he genres roots as much as his recording locales in England, Turkey and Germany.
With a unifying emphasis on the downstroke, he presents a diverse yet coherent session for stoned home listening and headphone mooches, drawing strong performance from grime legend Trim on Itchin and, better yet, a militant attack from Croydon’s Rocks FOE in Set It Straight, and erring close as we’ve heard to an update of Muslimgauze in the brassy swag of Hadi Hadi Ah and the dusted hip hop crackish of Drae Da Skimask and the Astral Black clan in Köfte Cloud or the chiming knocks of Russian Glass.
