Last years ‘Fictions’ was a highlight of the glut of synth releases that have emerged recently. It should have hardly been surprising then that it came from the mind of a veteran musician; Godspeed alum Roger Tellier-Craig, and now he returns once more to the fray with this charming addition to the NNA canon. Again exploring the outer limits of hazy near-new age synthesis, Tellier-Craig brings to mind simpler times conjuring both the classic Tangerine Dream era and the early Emeralds-wave synthesizer releases that were birthed from it. ‘Horizon Fears’ is far from a mere exercise though, and the inherent beauty of the record comes from Tellier-Craig’s understanding of his craft – in a time when most ‘synth’ records have become a samey batch of modular experiments, Tellier-Craig has offered a well-timed antidote. Lovely stuff.
