Nick Zanca (fka Mister Lies) takes a break from producing material for Lucy Liyou and Wendy Eisenberg to turn in a proper, lavishly orchestrated singer-songwriter album in the tradition of Jim O'Rourke or Jon Brion.
'Hindsight' is Zanca's first proper pop album, and he's assembled some of his most talented friends to help him out, including mari maurice (aka more eaze), who plays pedal steel, violin, viola and electronics, guitarist Eisenberg, bassist Lexi Bodick and percussionist Sarah Galdes. He regards the album as a "producer's songwriter album", and you can hear why immediately. His skill behind the desk is evident on opener 'Not An Artist (BGM)', not just in the mixing and recording, but in the tiny asides, the musical choices - even the lyrics themselves.
Quite how much of this you can stomach depends on how much classic American AOR you've been in contact with - Zanca pulls liberally from Steely Dan's meticulous early run - but it's devilishly clever stuff, particularly as it drifts into the second half. The title track, for example, sounds more like David Sylvian's latter day gear, with Zanca's slo-mo, romantic croons bedded in rippling electronics and woken up by maurice's soaring pedal steel vamps.
