Boomkat Product Review:
Gang Gang Dance are a fragmentary musical ensemble whose live shows have become the subject of reverential mutterings around the world. Attempting to bridge the gap between their patchy formal recordings. 'Hillulah' is (at its core) a live album; but one which doesn't relent to the usual set of crowd cheering clichés. Alternating between squawk rock, hazy instrumentation and full out gibbering-experimentalism, GGD can at times come across as unnecessarily contrived. But give 'Hillulah' a chance and it unhesitatingly starts to shine. Stitched together as a pretty continuous piece, the occasionally scratchy recordings often part to reveal soaring strings and cold-water synths (the unnamed second track) which build through loquacious percussion into breathtaking peaks of battered noise. Elsewhere they prefer ear-bleeding bouts of Melt Banana-esque shenanigans, but overall 'Hillulah' is a charming and graceful beast that will illicit many a smile.
