Tirzah appoints key members of the London jazz and experimental scene, alongside the likes of Actress, Arca and Lafawndah, to rework her outstanding ‘Colourgrade’ album.
Racking up revisions by Actress, Fauzia, Speakers Corner Quartet, Still House Plants, and Loraine James, alongside international notables Arca and Lafawndah, the suite sees the modest but soulfully-rich source material of Tirzah’s acclaimed 2nd album teased into a spectrum of sublime and surprising variations.
If we’re playing favourites, there’s a few clear standouts; not least Actress’ 10 min deep techno dismantling of ’Sink In’, treated to his special iridescent greyscale process, and no doubt the way that Arca renders the title track as a smudged, 8 minute panoramic glyde over London at night. But where they’re impressionistic, we find the likes of Tone getting closer to the original material in the sublime ‘80s reggae-soul take on ‘Beating’, while Fauzia neatly resets ‘Tectonic’ to a nimble 2-step/dubstep bounce.
Elsewhere Speakers Corner Quartet dial up Tirzah’s inherent jazz soul on a juicy rework of ‘Hive Mind’, contrasting smartly with Lafawndah’s smeared jazz notes in the ‘Crepuscular Rays’ remix, and classy introduction to Anja Ngozi with a tenderised take on ‘Sleeping’, while the likes of Loraine James and Still House Plants gets wild with it in very different ways.
