Boomkat Product Review:
This is the second full-length release from the Chicagoan trio, Rope, whose abrasive no-wave take on free jazz splutters and rasps its way through a gamut of dark, emotive territories. There’s a tone of suspenseful menace throughout the album, but never more so than on the vocal duet, ‘The Financial Imperative’ an alternately whispered and groaned piece in which bassist/vocalist Robert Iwanik collaborates with Oxbow’s Eugene Robinson, who also guests on three other tracks. It’s a neat summation of the ominous abstractions that dominate the record. At the heart of the trio is a guitar, bass and drums combo, yet the nuanced, textured compositions here always seem loaded with far more instrumentation than this – such is the band’s impressive handle on group dynamics.
