Boomkat Product Review:
While the easiest comparison to make when listening to Shadowbox (aka Bonnie Baxter) might be Fever Ray, the artist that springs to mine for us is underappreciated Dutch weirdo Solex with her quirky lo-fidelity pop charm, or possibly even Leila (at a push). There’s a pop skeleton beneath the charred flesh and bones of Baxter’s quivering electronics, and while at times she absorbs the same pseudo-dubstep tropes as fellow wyrd-popper James Blake, the music sounds just slightly out of time somehow. It’s a good look, and jives perfectly with this generation’s awkward discontent, but also works as a subtle foil for more bombastic darkwavers like Zola Jesus. Well worth a closer look!
