Superb summary of late ‘90s/early ‘00s acid jazz-inflected dub and trip hop soul spirits by Arabic-Scouse-Aussie MC and producer Ali Omar on Naarm’s ever reliable Efficient Space - RIYL Paul St. Hilaire, DJ Krush, Bobby Konders, Muslimgauze.
‘Hashish Hits’ hails the sound and rich backstory of one Ali Omar, whose work and family links Merseybeat and Madchester to Sydney via soundsystem culture and a larger than life character and rich backstory. Born one of ten kids in working class Liverpool, Omar led a life well lived until his passing, from cancer, in 2009. Spurred by stories from his sister, Beryl Marsden, a Mersybeat star who supported The Beatles on their final UK tour, Omar would also take his art school experience forward thru Manchester’s ‘80s/‘90s heyday to Sydney, where he formed a duo with fellow pom Andy Fitzgerald and became a staple of the city’s dub, jungle and bass clubs.
These eight cuts showcase the best of Omar’s work, solo and in the Atone duo with Fitzgerald. It’s all very much of its time, encompassing bits of lilting laid-back electro-dub-house like False Tuned meets Stereotyp in ‘Hashish’ and croon of ‘For Love’s Sake’, whilst drawing on his heritage in a Muslimgauze mode on a lean stepper ‘The Last Straw’ or a heavier ’Suicide Bomber’, and Bobby Konders-esque deep house in ‘Nu Stone Groove’ or acid dub of ‘Roll Up’, beside a fine bit of smoky trip hop soul downbeats of ‘On Release’ surely recalling DJ Krush and Wild Bunch thru the haze.
