Boomkat Product Review:
The deceptively monikered Gaelic quartet Cyann & Benn follow up 2003's 'Spring' with new album 'Happy like an Autumn Tree'. As anyone who is familiar with their work through Gooom's collaboration collections will know, Cyann & Benn have tightened their sound considerably during the recording of 'Happy Like an Autumn Tree' simultaneously retaining the lilting charm of their early releases but adding an altogether more brittle edge. Opening with the moogtronica of 'Circle', we are treated to a first half instrumental that dips in and out of downtempo territory before hyperactive trumpets signal the onset of Sigur Ros acoustic grandeur and a clutch of candidly intimate vocals. Not afraid of a bit of pomp, 'Gone To Waste' sees Cyann & Benn laying out richly textured walls of sound that snags your attention with glitchy electronic details before you are wrong footed and sent rocketing upwards aboard a fully fledged raft of orchestration. Elsewhere '(Close to Discovery)' is an unashamedly climactic torch song, 'Summer' takes one part Elliot Smith then seasons it with some bubbling analogue effects whilst '(TidE)' is a full on haunted i-pod of backwards segments and skipping beats.
