Boomkat Product Review:
With Home Normal being mostly located in Japan, it seems almost inevitable that at some point the label would issue something that revelled in its Far Eastern location. Unusually though, the first album that really does this isn’t from Japan at all – Gurun Gurun, despite their distinctly Japanese sound are actually from the Czech Republic. I suppose this is why they manage to avoid the cloying sweetness of many of their contemporaries; the sound of Gurun Gurun is still delicate, electronic pop, but tempered slightly by noise and grit. To enhance the J-Pop cred we have scene luminaries Moskitoo, Sawako and Rurakiss who contribute their lilting vocal tones giving the album the kind of cherry-blossom glow we all know and love. What the duo lack in originality they more than make up for in execution; the album is akin to drinking a delicate cup of green tea – nothing new but damn does it taste good.
