Under a title translating to “it bangs” in Lugandan, ‘Gukuba’ lives up to its name with a deliriously fractal trip between continents, disciplines, and vibes that can also simply be summed up as: same energy. Helmed by Suzi Analogue and Heavee in USA, and starring breakthru artists including Authentically Plastic, Turkana, and Nsasi from Kampala, UG’s Anti-Mass collective, the 16-track set tiles full-bodied dance workouts with a number of smartly placed interlude abstractions that give the collection a sense of purpose and character beyond the ‘floor. No doubt it’s an essential look for fans of the Nyege Nyege tapes/Hakuna Kulala axis as much as acolytes of Haus of Altr, Hyperdub and Teklife.
Recently spotted on YOUTH, UG’s Authentically Plastic is behind many highlights, from the percolated attack of ‘Paradox’ with Queens D. Light, to polymetric badness of ‘Mapping Mirrors Through Bodies of Water’ with Elevation, and the hardcore techno ramrod ‘Static Room’ with Saffiyah, and the SAWII-like vignette ’Nnterlude 003’. Footwork don Heavee also impresses on away days from 160bpm in the dancehall parry of ‘Come N Get It’ with Nsasi, and engineering across the set, and NNSS’ Suzi Analogue wins with the Detroit-meets-shekere ghetto-tech bounce of ‘Make It Shake’ beside Turkana and Queens D. Light. However, the maddest tackle is saved for No Eyes & Nsasi’s absolutely raggo breakcore-singeli-type blast ‘Chun Li Is An Op’, and the almost flashcore styles of ‘I Saw U But Ur Still Not Here’.
