Boomkat Product Review:
*Near-perfect recreation of original jacket, complete with Portuguese liner notes and English translations* Drag City present the exquisite debut album by Carlos Paredes, an acknowledged maestro of the Portuguese twelve-string guitar. Carlos' instrument of choice has a heritage dating back several hundreds of years and is made to a design which has been modified and altered to different standards across its country of origin. By the time Carlos started playing, it was generally agreed on a standard short-necked and wide-bodied construction with twelve strings strung in six courses comprising two steel strings each. It has a distinctive tuning mechanism and is synonymous with traditional Portuguese pop style known as Fado, but, in his quest for perfection the virtuoso Paredes would alter the string placements and tuning to achieve a wider range of chords and his own personal tuning. His mastery of the instrument elevates his music beyond traditional Portuguese to a worldwide standard of musicianship which has been recognised with the Kronos Quartet's version of his soundtrack 'Os Verdes Anos' on their 2000 album 'Caravan', and Six Organs Of Admittance paying tribute through the album 'School Of The Flower Of Paredes'. Lovers of Latin music and the music of the Takoma school should check this without delay.
