Boomkat Product Review:
I know, I know – you’ve all had it with 8-bit, wonky synthed hypercolor bollox, so why should you get excited by Groundislava? Maybe because, like Flying Lotus before him, Jasper Patterson is not just a one trick pony; while the 8-bit ‘thing’ might be done to death right now, Patterson simply uses it as a part of his palette to help him craft complex, occasionally achingly-beautiful pop music. Oh yeah, pop – some of the tracks even have vocals to prove it, we have Jake Weary, JonWayne, Young Montana and Shlohmo popping up to add a bit of variation to Patterson’s slippery beatplay and powder-enhanced synth zaps. It works too, while the producer might be in his element when he’s just working with a low end, some puff-puff shimmer and a beat that’d put Weezy’s leg into spasm – the occasional Weilheim-style vocal doesn’t go amiss. Bass, humans, NES-fetishism, and a peppering of the sort of rap fallout you only get on US soil makes Groundislava a way more varied album than you might expect to hear – don’t miss it!
