Boomkat Product Review:
Coming from the Man Recordings imprint that famously brought us the Sinden 12" that is still on rotation round these parts, 'Gringao' is the debut full length from MC Gringo, a guy who claims to be 100% Rio Baile Funk. It's good too, and a far cry from the slightly underwhelming slew of Brazilian-related releases recently (that means you Bonde De Role) every track is impeccably produced and has an energy that's impossible to ignore. In fact the production is so tight I was checking the back cover to see if Diplo had credits on any of the tracks, but strangely enough he's nowhere to be seen and you've got to hand it to MC Gringo and his collaborators for this heavy heady mix. Synth stabs, horns and otherwise cheesy latin samples are the order of the day, but everything is rolled together into an assertive and sometimes aggressive battle cry, something you can imagine calls people to arms in the Rio slums, but would just as happily work in a Hoxton nightclub. Let's hope MC Gringo gets the attention he deserves - great stuff.
