Boomkat Product Review:
This soundtrack to Noah Baumbach's new film, Greenberg, is most notable for hosting eleven new pieces of music by DFA founder and LCD Soundsytem principal James Murphy. There is actually a new LCD Soundsystem track on here, but 'Oh You (Christmas Blues)' seems to thrive on a similar set of Beatles and Bowie influences as much of Murphy's solo material here. These compositions show rather different sides to Murphy's skillset than his dayjob would normally permit, writing artful ballads like 'Photographs' and 'Birthday Song' one moment and thumping through energetic acoustic hoedowns like 'If You Need A Friend' the next. Murphy sounds a little like Jamie Lidell on 'People', adopting a warm, soulful croon while dub-flecked bossa-box beats shuffle along with stabbing organ accompaniment. 'Sleep Baby' meanwhile riffs on Brian Eno's 'Another Green World' and instrumental interludes like 'Dear You' exhibit some kinship with Jon Brion's soundtrack output - there's lots of fine work to sift through here. In addition to the Murphy score, the disc also includes great selections from Nite Jewel, Galaxie 500, The Sonics and Albert Hammond (not Jr.) whose 1972 hit 'It Never Rains In California' gets a welcome airing. Good stuff.
