NYC techno pioneer Function sticks to his guns with classical results on a trio of crisply spacious, effortlessly rolling cuts augmented by a Conet Project collage
The ‘Green’ EP is a sterling reminder of styles notable by their absence in post-pandemic years. Maybe it’s just our experience, but this sort of aerodynamic, immersive techno has largely been sidelined in favour of cheap fix immediacy - “techno” pop edits and gap year garage - often to the detriment of the dance.
Don’t get us wrong, we do like and play a lot of newer flavours, and do not subscribe to the techno-bore rhetoric of gatekeeping dufuses, but listening to the crystal clear sound design and sexy flow of ‘Initiation’, the grittier, Regis-esque rolige of its variant ‘Aetrenum (Meridian)’, or the brooding heft of ‘Desire and memory (Live extraction)’ can’t help but make us nostalgic for nights spent wrapped up in this sorta stuff. His use of samples from The Conet Project in the beatless shape of ‘New Designation’ is a fine contrast to a classy EP too.
