Boomkat Product Review:
How wonderful to be both madly eccentric and hugely talented. That's the trick of one Will Oldham - king of new folk, veteran of musical eccentricity and, above all, master of unbeleivably good songwriting. Following up the sublime folk masterpiece "Master and Everyone", Mr Oldham digs out some of his own Palace Music material and re-records them under his Bonnie Prince Billy guise. The result is a hugely accessable collection of country folk songs that sound like ageless standards - complete with much twangy guitar and a western drawl that gives this album a somehow familiar edge. Make no mistake - this is Bonnie Prince Billy's most commercial collection of tracks to date, so much so that you wouldn't bat an eyelid if you had heard these tracks on Nashville FM, but the man just retains that certain undefineable edge that never ceases to tug at the heartstrings. Listen to the magnificent "Riding", for instance, and you'll know exactly what we mean. Strangely compelling stuff from one of our greatest contemporary singer-songwriters. Recommended.
