Released as the 20th Century tiptoed eagerly into the 21st, this bumper release is widely regarded as Sonic Youth's most experimental album. Of course it is, it's the SY guys (and a whole host of collaborators including Jim O'Rourke, Christian Marclay, Takeshi Kosugi and more) giving their renditions of some of the most important pieces of experimental music written in the 20th Century. And my my, what renditions they are - you've no doubt already heard their version of Steve Reich's classic 'Pendulum Music' (which appears here as the final track), but we also get incredibly rich and diverse views of John Cage's 'Six', Christian Wolff's 'Edges', Cornelius Cardew's 'Treatise', Yoko Ono's 12 second 'Voice Piece for Soprano'... really there's so much to get stuck into here it seems stupid to go on listing everything. There's a good reason why Sonic Youth are my favourite band, not only have they retained the ability to write darned good rock music, they can still take time out of their busy schedule to make music that confuses, confounds and rewards in equal measure - who would have thought that a band responsible for 'Rather Ripped' would also manage to pull off something like this? Absolutely phenomenal record - just buy it.
