Gold Panda is an artist whose sound naturally endears him to the album format, as clearly proved in Good Luck and do Your Best, his elegant, warm, and infectious 3rd LP following the well-received Lucky Shiner (2010) and Half of Where You Live (2013) albums, and a fine DJ-Kicks selection.
That mannered charm comes in part from the record’s inspiration - as much as the artist’s innate gift for writing hooks and nagging grooves, as well as the intimate recording process; located at both his parents’ home in Chelmsford, Essex; and in post-production at his pal, Luke Abbott’s place in Norwich.
It makes for a beautifully coherent session, crackling with colourful ideas gleaned from a variable palette of pastoral tones and happy jazz motifs that filter thru the drizzly textures and grainy drums like rainbows in hazy, overcast days.
That in-between, inter-seasonal fidelity knits the whole thing together, from the frayed, elusive, Murakami-esque feel of Metal Bird to the intoxicatingly positive flourish of closer, Your Good Times Are Just Beginning, encapsulating that heartfelt yet sweetly lost-in-translation feeling of the title.
